Towards the end of October, 1916, 12th Division left the Somme and by the end of the month had taken over a sector of the line at Agny, near Arras. On 19th November, 9th Royal Fusiliers of 36 Brigade moved into the front line here. The Battalion Diary for 21st November recorded that a patrol went out in the early hours but got caught on the wire and was shot at causing some casualties. However, the probable cause of the death of Frederick Bardell on this day was when the enemy opened up with heavy trench mortars (minenwerfers) in the late afternoon doing considerable damage including the destruction of at least one dug-out. |
